Winter at Mount Prospect Academy may bring snow and cold temperatures, but for some students, it’s also a season of preparation and growth. While others are enjoying winter activities, a group of students has been spending time in the greenhouse, learning what it takes to cultivate crops, care for shared spaces, and work together toward a long-term goal. These hands-on experiences encourage patience, responsibility, and collaboration as students look ahead to the changing seasons.

This past week, students began planting seeds in anticipation of spring—even with snow still on the ground outside. Green beans, carrots, and beets were carefully

planted as the greenhouse started to fill with trays of soil and promise for the months ahead. Students learned about seed spacing, soil preparation, and the importance of consistent care as they laid the foundation for the upcoming spring and summer garden.

In addition to planting, students worked together to prepare the greenhouse itself. Time was spent organizing the space, maintaining equipment, and ensuring everything was ready for continued use. On the same day, students also assisted with winter tasks such as fixing ice fishing equipment and maintaining greenhouse winterization, showing flexibility and teamwork across seasonal responsibilities.

Even as winter weather continues, the greenhouse serves as a reminder of what’s to come. Students and faculty are focused on preparation, learning, and staying hopeful for warmer days ahead. We look forward to watching these early efforts grow into a thriving garden and celebrating the skills and dedication students bring to every stage of the process.
