Mount Prospect Academy Students Learn About Police K9 Units Through Interactive Demonstrations
Building positive connections within the community is an important part of helping students feel safe, supported, and engaged. Recently, students and staff had the exciting opportunity to meet local law enforcement officers and their highly trained K9 partners during a special educational visit. The experience offered a unique look into the important work these teams do every day to help keep communities safe.
During the event, students were introduced to six different categories of police dogs, each with a specialized role. The K9 teams demonstrated skills related to bomb detection, fire investigation, comfort services, patrol and narcotics work, tracking, and article searches. Each dog was accompanied by the officer who trained and works alongside them, giving students valuable insight into the strong bond and teamwork required for success in these roles.

Students watched a variety of engaging demonstrations that showcased the dogs’ incredible abilities. From locating hidden individuals to identifying specific scents and finding objects hidden in large areas, the K9s impressed everyone with their focus, intelligence, and training. These hands-on demonstrations helped students better understand how law enforcement agencies utilize K9 units to support public safety.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for students to interact directly with the officers and dogs. Students asked questions about training, daily responsibilities, and overall “day in the life” of a police dog. Many also enjoyed collecting K9 trading cards featuring information about the dogs and their specialties, making the experience both educational and memorable.

Experiences like this help strengthen community relationships while providing students with meaningful learning opportunities beyond the classroom. We are grateful to our local law enforcement partners and staff members who helped make this event possible.
