MPA’s Squamscott River Academy (SRA) was buzzing with excitement this fall as students and staff welcomed New Hampshire Governor Kelly Ayotte for a special on-campus visit. For 90 memorable minutes, SRA students led the way—sharing their learning, their creativity, and their pride in a school community that supports growth, resilience, and possibility.

From the moment the visit began, it was clear this was a student-centered experience. Governor Ayotte joined SRA’s Friday assembly and spent time meeting with small groups of students, learning firsthand about the innovative, competency-based instruction happening every day at the academy. One highlight came from biology students, who blended science and creativity by presenting the Governor with a loaf of sourdough bread made from their own starter culture—an engaging example of hands-on learning in action.

As the tour continued, students showcased artwork, academic projects, and shared personal reflections on what Squamscott River Academy has meant to them. The visit concluded on a powerful and uplifting note when SRA’s theater students performed an a cappella rendition of “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman—a fitting anthem for a community that celebrates individuality, courage, and self-expression.

SRA Director of Academics Jennifer Marino, M.Ed., CAGS, presented Governor Ayotte with a binder highlighting recent programs and student essays that reflect the impact of SRA’s therapeutic and academic supports. As part of Mount Prospect Academy since 2019, Squamscott River Academy serves students ages 11–17, offering a nurturing, structured environment where academic instruction is paired with social-emotional and behavioral supports designed to help students thrive.

Governor Ayotte praised the school’s commitment to helping students reach their full potential, noting the creativity, academic rigor, and strong sense of community she observed throughout her visit. Mount Prospect Academy President Jeffrey Caron, M.Ed., CAGS, echoed those sentiments, recognizing the students’ confidence and leadership as they shared their stories and accomplishments.

For staff, the visit was a meaningful affirmation of the work happening at SRA every day. Superintendent John Fulp, M.Ed., CAGS, reflected on the dedication of the faculty and the promising futures ahead for SRA students, while Marino shared her pride in the initiative and preparation students demonstrated throughout the event.

At Squamscott River Academy, learning goes far beyond textbooks. It’s about connection, confidence, and creating opportunities for students to succeed—academically, emotionally, and socially. Governor Ayotte’s visit was not just a special event, but a celebration of the incredible students and educators who make SRA a place where young people are truly seen, supported, and inspired to grow.
