Winter Adventures in Action: Adventure Therapy at the Stewardship Center

PreviousNext

Adventure Therapy at the Stewardship Center has become a highlight for students, offering opportunities to explore outdoor winter adventures while building skills, confidence, and connection. Sessions often begin with a smaller group and grow as the day continues, creating space for both focused instruction and high-energy group experiences. Each outing brings something new, making every Adventure Therapy experience engaging and memorable.

One recent Adventure Therapy session was packed with activity from start to finish. Students began with a bike ride before jumping into a spirited game of boot hockey. The group then shifted to fire starting and warming up around an outdoor campfire. Learning continued with pitching tents and exploring what it takes to camp safely and comfortably in winter conditions. Students were especially engaged while testing subzero sleeping bags and discovering creative ways to stay warm, such as using a water bottle filled with hot water inside a sleeping bag. The experience wrapped up with more boot hockey and a well-earned outdoor dinner.

Snow much fun playing boot hockey!

Of all the activities, boot hockey easily stole the show. On the iced-over pond, students slipped, slid, laughed, and chased the puck with contagious enthusiasm. Some were focused on keeping score, while others were there purely for the joy of the game and time spent together. Even as daylight faded, students remained energized and eager to keep playing.

Another Adventure Therapy experience brought a fresh challenge: building a snow shelter. With support from staff and the use of heavy equipment, students spent hours shaping snow from a recent storm into a sturdy structure. Engagement was high as students worked collaboratively, learning how snow shelters form and how they change as temperatures shift and snow settles. The shelter will continue to evolve as more snow arrives, offering ongoing opportunities for hands-on learning.

Adventure Therapy continues to be a powerful blend of learning, movement, and fun. Whether students are developing outdoor skills or simply sharing laughter during group activities, these moments reflect the heart of experiential learning at Mount Prospect Academy. At the Stewardship Center, there is always something happening—and never a dull moment.
