Freezing temperatures, snowfall, and short winter days haven’t stopped students from conducting a scientific experiment on plant growth in Mount Prospect Academy’s greenhouse.

The students are conducting a multi-week experiment, called The Tower Garden Challenge, which provides hands-on learning in science, math, and writing.

MPA teacher Jessica Boynton manages the greenhouse, and she has used the building to run The Tower Garden Challenge during the dead of winter. The experiment’s hands-on components help students stay engaged with the material they are learning, Boynton said.

Art Teacher Tyler Pike saw a sense of pride and craftsmanship swell within students as they made holiday gifts — working to improve artistic designs, or making multiple attempts to perfect their projects.

Clay Hanukkah dreidels, Christmas tree ornaments, wreaths, decorative holiday plates, and gingerbread houses are among the many items that Mount Prospect Academy students made in the weeks before winter break.

Pike and several other MPA teachers guided students through the gift-making projects.

“For many of our students, gift-making means getting to go home, seeing the people they care about, h...

As he loaded firewood into a trailer for delivery to a family in need, Mount Prospect Academy student Hunter D. said he was feeling good about himself.

“I like to be able to say, ‘Yeah, I helped that person out. It’s my good deed for the day, and I like doing good deeds every day,'” Hunter said.

Hunter was volunteering for a new MPA initiative that has supplied free firewood to families in the Warren area.

People receiving the firewood are elderly or having health problems, and they haven’t been able to stack up their wood pile ahead of the winter, Warren Town Administrator Austin Albro said.

Gray skies and threat of rain didn’t spook attendees away from enjoying Mount Prospect Academy's Halloween Family Fun Run, 5K, and food drive.

About 35 people and five dogs attended the event.

Participants brought enough non-perishable food donations to fill two milk crates. MPA donated the food to The Bridge House, a homeless shelter and veteran support center in Plymouth, NH.

Several attendees dressed up in Halloween costumes, and rain held off until after the run was complete.

“Everyone arrived with a positive attitude and great costumes," event organizer Allison Shenloogian said. "Fun was...

As fall season temperatures set in, and green leaves transformed into brilliant shades of red, yellow, and orange, two Mount Prospect Academy students volunteered their time.

The students — guided by Mike Adamkowski, executive director of Mount Prospect Academy's Adventure Based Trauma Informed Treatment program — helped replace a washed-out culvert that was blocking access to the Oliverian Pond Boat launch.

The road and boat launch have re-opened since this work was finished in early October.

"We actually had a group paddle on the pond on Wednesday the 10th, and judging by the forecas...

Mount Prospect Academy's recently constructed climbing tower has provided students with new opportunities to push their comfort zones, participate in therapy, and get exercise.

The tower was built in fall 2017, and it is managed by MPA's Adventure Based program. Climbing can help students learn to trust themselves and others, while providing healthy exercise, according to Mike Adamkowski, executive director of MPA's Adventure Based Trauma Informed Treatment program.

"Climbing gives us an opportunity to talk with students about comfort zones," Adamkowski said:...

Whether they were examining coastal tide pools in Rye, NH, or studying geology and cleaning up litter at Bretton Woods Ski Resort – this month Mount Prospect Academy students learned mountains of information while staying active outside.

MPA science instructor, Karen McAlpine, regularly immerses students in nature while teaching. MPA students often benefit from an outdoor learning environment because they are non-traditional learners who have difficulty succeeding in four-walled classroom environments, McAlpine said.

Many MPA students can be clinically identified as emotionally handicappe...

Mount Prospect Academy’s staff and faculty are excited to see the summer progressing! The warm weather has been great for our students to get outside swimming, fishing, adventuring, and participating in other forms of outdoor learning and healthy exercise.

Renovation and landscaping work is mostly complete at our 19 Owl St. property in Campton, NH. The facility improvements include the addition of a new greenhouse, which MPA will use to educate students in agriculture. MPA plans to serve vegetables that are grown in the greenhouse at school meals.

Local community members may have noticed our s...

"If you sat me down two or three years ago and told me I’d be getting my diploma, I’d have called you a liar,” Bryon said.

Students at Mount Prospect Academy can surprise you. Students at any school can surprise you, really. Whether it be through academic achievements, athletics, extracurriculars, or behaviors – working with young adults in a school setting can throw you curve balls that you never thought you’d see coming your way. The young men who come to Mount Prospect Academy, however, can really catch you off guard. They come from varied backgrounds, some with checkered pasts and upbringi...

Throughout his employment with Mount Prospect Academy, Clinician Hilel Gubenko has embraced opportunities to provide clients with corrective emotional experiences, and he has created opportunities for clients to connect with positive, accepting, and non-judgmental adults; maintaining a “drops in a bucket” approach to residential and clinical work.

Hilel (pictured above) has been a member of the CAST since the program opened in its Plymouth location in 2014. Prior to that, Hilel held several roles with MPA, and he has worked from a youth counselor position to a residential program director. Hile...
